BarcampSaigon 2015


Barcamp Saigon is one of my most expected events of the year. This year, it took place at RMIT university. As usual, it brought many useful topics to the community. Here is all topics that I have attended.

Scale it! - Lars Jankowfsky

Lars is founder of 8bitrockr.com

How do we make a decision correctly? It is hard to know that until we try and measure it. He gave an example about how good an app was. And, most of people thought that the app with nice user interfaces is good at the first look. But it is not correct because it is only true until we try to use it, even the nice GUI app sometime is not good at UX, functionalities, etc.

The key of success for working in team is collaboration. We can not only base on the experience of members likes: "In my opinions| As I know.... this is the best way..bla..bla.." but we should test it. Therefore, manually testing as well as automation testing is more and more necessary nowadays.

Shelfout - Chia sẻ sách và đam mê đọc sách - Nguyễn Trọng Tín.

Nguyễn Trọng Tín is founder of shelfout.com. His idea is about creating a community in order to sharing books. He saw that 81% of book is not used again after it is already read once and he called it is waste. He has already found some existing systems like goodreads.com, Facebook groups but they are not satisfied his expectations. By shelfout.com, he wants to connect all people with passion on reading and books can be used more effectively.

Learn or Die? - Lars Jankowfsky.

Once again, he gave a question "If I want to build an app, which programming language should I use?". Actually, we are not sure. He provided some information from surveys and statistic that shows a lot of languages can be used and the popular one is different from region. So, we should be flexible base on what we know. The world always changes and we should learn to update our knowledge.

IoT How developers can get money - Thanh VNG.

Thanh is working in VNG, Vietnam. IoT (Internet of Things) is a bit trend today. Therefore, developers can have a big chances to work and earn money from that.

Why your proposal was ignored? - Soshi  Nemoto.

Soshi is from Molodo Vietnam. Your proposal should be logical.

Coding Exercise, Episode 1

I have received the following exercise from an interviewer, he didn't give the name of the problem. Honestly, I have no idea how to solve this problem even I have tried to read it three times before. Since I used to be a person who always tells myself "I am not the one good at algorithms", but giving up something too soon which I feel that I didn't spend enough effort to overcome is not my way. Then, I have sticked on it for 24 hours. According to the given image on the problem, I tried to get more clues by searching. Thanks to Google, I found a similar problem on Hackerrank (attached link below). My target here was trying my best to just understand the problem and was trying to solve it accordingly by the Editorial on Hackerrank. Automating deployment and managing apps on OpenShift

Previously, we maintained OpenShift templates for deploying apps in development environments as well as delivering these templates to our customers for their on-prem deployment. Customers who refer to our templates (as well as documentation) have their own configuration management tools to automate the deployment such as ArgoCD and FluxCD. My son's buildings Our developers usually modify templates (YAML) directly on OpenShift for testing and then adjust the corresponding templates stored in the Git repository in Bitbucket. This sometimes causes an issue that delivered templates are incorrect because: - Developers forget to update the templates in Git repositories. - Developers don’t test the templates Therefore, our goal was to integrate a tool into our CI/CD that can automate and manage the configuration of OpenShift apps. Generating PDF/A From HTML in Meteor

My live-chat app was a folk of project Rocket.Chat which was built with Meteor. The app had a feature that administrative users were able to export the conversations into PDF files. And, they wanted to archive these files for a long time. I happened to know that PDF/A documents were good for this purpose. It was really frustrated to find a solution with free libraries. Actually, it took me more than two weeks to find a possible approach. TL, DR; Using Puppeteer to generate a normal PDF and using PDFBox to load and converting the generated PDF into PDF/A compliance.
